Spelling Daily work

Words Their Way:  Spelling Routine (Mrs. Miller)

Words Their Way is a spelling program that allows students to learn words at their level of instruction.  Students practice the skills through a variety of sorting and writing activities.  This schedule is based on a 5-day school week.  There will be some weeks when we do not do spelling and of course the students would not have spelling homework.

Tuesday:  Word Sort

Words will come in an envelope.   Practice sorting them under the correct headings, then copy them into your Spelling Notebook under the correct headings.  Then explain how they are sorted, for example:  long –a and short –a.

Wednesday:  Making Connections

Sort words one time.  Then pick four of the words and make a connection.  For each word, make a connection to at least four new words.  The connection can be about beginning sounds, long vowels, or words that rhyme with your spelling word.  You should have a total of 16 words.  The work will be completed in your Spelling section of their notebook.

Thursday:  Writing Choice (Do one)

  1.  Sentences:  Write five sentences, using two spelling words in each sentence.  Underline the spelling words in each sentence.  Make these sentences using details.  (Meeting the standard example:  I bumped my elbow on the corner of the yellow plastic lawn chairs as I was running.  Not meeting the standard: My elbow is yellow.)
  2. Story:  Write a short story using at least seven of your spelling words.  Underline the spelling words.  The story should have a beginning, middle and end.

Friday:  Buddy Check

  1. Find a buddy when doing your homework (friend, family member, homework supervisor etc.)
  2. Take out your spelling words and arrange the sort categories on the table.  Shuffle the rest of the words and give them to your buddy.
  3. As your buddy says the words, point to the correct category.  If you get it correctly, your buddy will hand you the word and you can place it under the category.  If not, your buddy will put it at the bottom of the category and you can try again.
  4. Then ask your buddy to pick up the words randomly and ask you to spell the word.  Practice spelling all words.

Test:  Monday
